According to recent rumors over in China, the Nokia 9 will include an in-display fingerprint reader.
It is unclear whether the smartphone will actually be released under the name of Nokia 9, since some sources are saying it might actually be Nokia 8 Pro, therefore adding a third item next to the already-existent Nokia 8 2017 and Nokia 8 Sirocco, which were announced earlier this month at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. For the sake of clarity, we will keep calling it Nokia 9 throughout this article.
Nokia 9 will probably be the last choice Nokia smartphone to be released in 2018; the company that is creating it, HMD, is probably targeting the late summer as an approximate release period.
Therefore, the new phone might be unveiled at the IFA 2018 and begin its retailing before the next holiday season, according to reports.
Like other HMD 2018 smartphones, the Nokia 9 might launch as part of Google’s Android one program, thus running Android Oreo OS by default. Nokia 6, 7 Plus and Sirocco will all be released as the spiritual successors to the Nexus program, although with no major design changes from Google.
It is also rumored that the Nokia 9 will have a curved display, akin to Nokia 8 Sirocco, which is comparable with the Samsung Edge Display panels.
At the time of writing this article, it is uncertain which company will be supplying HMD the actual fingerprint sensor modules for adding to the Nokia 9.
However, if the company is determined to have an in-display fingerprint sensor, it might actually start collaborating with Synaptics for the job. Synaptics is currently the best on the market at delivering such technology to the various developers.
As their most recent feat, they have provided their own optical scanner into the Vivo x20 UD, the first smartphone in the entire world that has an in-display fingerprint reader.
