The fact that Sony is working on a new console is already known but, lately, many rumors emerged on the Internet regarding its features. Now, other rumors popped up saying that PlayStation 5 release date won’t occur before 2020. Besides, PlayStation 5 won’t run PS4 games.
PlayStation 5 Release Date – Not Before 2020
Two insiders who preferred to remain anonymous said that Sony is already working on the new console but it won’t be able to launch it before the end of 2019. According to these sources, PlayStation 5 will most probably hit the shelves in 2020.
These new rumors undermine those of one week ago which talked about a possible PlayStation 5 release in 2018.
However, “On a multi-year project, a lot can happen to shift schedules both forward and backward,” said one of the insiders, cited by Kotaku.
Also, the sources debated the rumors saying that Sony has sent PS5 devkits to developers. These devkits could be nothing more than test versions of the CPU and GPU of the future PlayStation 5.
PlayStation 5 Won’t Run PS4 Games But Will Play Games That Won’t Run On PS4
Some rumors emerged during the past weeks saying that PlayStation 5 will run PS4 games.
However, the sources mentioned above said that Sony is planning to make its future PlayStation 5 run games that don’t run on PS4 but not that it will run the PS4 games as it’s the case with PS 4 Pro, which is able to run PS4 games.
On the other hand, according to Kotaku’s staff, who contacted Sony regarding a future console, not a single Sony developer seemed to know anything about the future PlayStation 5.
In conclusion, there is only one thing we know for sure, namely, a PlayStation 5 console will be launched somewhen. Until now, we also know that PlayStation 5 release date will not occur before 2020 and that Sony might deliver some information during the E3 2018 in June.
