Facebook Lost Its Popularity To Instagram And YouTube Among American Teenagers

American teenagers are straying from Facebook. A new research has shown that Facebook is not anymore the most popular social network for teenagers aged 13 to 17.

A couple of days ago, on Thursday, the Pew Research Center reported that only 51 percent of American teenagers are using Facebook. That’s 20 percent lower in comparison to the last survey conducted in 2015.

Nowadays, YouTube has become the most popular online platform for teenagers, as about 85 percent of them use YouTube. Also, American teenagers are more and more active on other social networks, a follows:

  • Instagram – 72%;
  • Snapchat – 69%;
  • Twitter – 32%;

As for Tumblr, this new study revealed that this social network hasn’t evolved since 2015 and is used by 14% of American teenagers.

Snapchat is number one in terms of the most frequently visited platform by teenagers.

Facebook lost its popularity among the American teenagers

Despite the fact that the study was carried out only on 750 American teenagers, the outcomes are gloomy enough to worry Facebook’s devs.

Recently, Facebook struggled to recover from its depreciation among its American and Canadian users but, globally, more and more people ditch Facebook over YouTube, Instagram, or Twitter.

But Daniel Ives, chief of technology research and strategy for GBH Insights stated that Facebook, Inc., is more interested in developing new improvements and enhancements for Instagram (owned by Facebook since 2012) when it comes to teens.

“Instagram has captured that age-group [teenagers] better than anyone could have expected. The figures show precisely why Instagram is one of the best technology acquisitions [made by Facebook] in the last 15 years,” said Daniel Ives.

The research also indicated that lower-income adolescents “are more likely to gravitate toward Facebook than those from higher-income households.”

Also, the research revealed that 45% of the respondents stated they are online all the time, a statistics that doubled since 2015 and was linked to the increased popularity of the smartphone which can offer non-stop access to the Internet.
