Things are not looking good for Facebook, and we are not talking only about the Cambridge Analytica data leak. A recent survey is showing that Facebook is losing against Snapchat, Instagram, and to all other internet platforms when it comes to popularity. Facebook isn’t what it used to be, and the social media’s teen user base is fading as a result.

Facebook Loses Popularity Among Teens

The survey was done by the folks at the Pew Research Center, and they found out that 51% of US teenagers between 13 to 17 years use Facebook. While the percentage might not seem that low, it actually is when compared to YouTube which has 85% of teens, Snapchat with 69%, and Instagram which boasts with 72%.

YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat – The Competition

Even though Facebook still holds the title of being the biggest social media platform in the world, things are not always going to look this way, especially since all the other rival internet platforms are catching up so fast.

Just take a look at Snapchat and its unique filters which keep users coming back for more. Facebook is doing its best to replicate that by creating its own camera filters, but things just aren’t the same.

On the other hand, we have Instagram which is renowned for being “the Facebook alternative” and teens love it because their parents don’t have Instagram accounts like they do on Facebook.

Social Media Environment is Changing

“The social media environment among teens is quite different from what it was just three years ago. Back then, teens’ social media use mostly revolved around Facebook. Today, their habits revolve less around a single platform. At the same time we’ve seen this shift, teens are more digitally connected than ever.” said Monica Anderson who is the lead author of the survey.
