Apple just revealed that it’s decided to eliminate iOS and Mac apps from its affiliate program.

In other words, websites that are sharing links to Apple apps won’t be able to gain affiliate revenue anymore after directing traffic to Apple’s App Stores.

Apple launched revamped App Stores for Mac and iOS

Apple claims that the company bases its decision to remove apps from the affiliate program due to the launch of the revamped App Stores for both Mac and iOS.

Just in case you didn’t know, Apple rolled out a revamped iOS App Store in iOS 11 and the company is also planning to introduce a new Mac App Store in macOS Mojave.

“Thank you for participating in the affiliate program for apps. With the launch of the new App Store on both iOS and macOS and their increased methods of app discovery, we will be removing apps from the affiliate program. Starting on October 1st, 2018, commissions for iOS and Mac apps and in-app content will be removed from the program. All other content types (music, movies, books, and TV) remain in the affiliate program,” Apple stated.

Before this decision was made, Apple used to offer affiliate partners 7% of the money generated from an iTunes related purchase and this included apps as well.

Back in 2017, Apple wanted to drop that rate to 2.5% for apps, but it eventually maintained the rate of 7% after getting massive backlash from both publishers and developers.

Now, it seems that the company removes Mac apps and iOS apps from the program altogether. Commission rates have been dropped to 2.5% on in-app content.

Movies, books and TV content will remain in the affiliate program

The company is also planning to remove commissions for iOS apps, Mac apps and also in-app content from the affiliate program that they have.

This will start on October 1, 2018. The affiliate program will maintain other content such as movies, music, books and TV-related content.
